For these unfortunate souls I either have a record of their burial at Ramandroog or I have a grave and no way to identify who is buried in it.  Please contact me at blewis@illinois.edu if you have any information about these graves.

Arthur Hathaway
Madras Civil Service

According to Cotton (1905), Ramandroog cemetery also contains the remains of Arthur Hathaway, Madras Civil Service, who died on 17 April 1866, aged 45 years.  “He died in his bullock-bandy [cart] near Yettinahatti, on the road from Bellary to Ramandroog, having been attacked by fever some days previously.  His service dates from 1839, and he had been Collector of Bellary since 1859.  He was the son of William Sila Hathaway of Langley Grove, Colnbrook, Bucks, and received his education at Sherborne School, which he left in 1836 for the E. I. College, Haileybury.”  (Cotton #858)

SW quarter of cemetery; “Sacred…memory….” can still be read from the upper third of the shale-like stone (a particularly poor choice for a memorial because this soft sedimentary rock spalls so badly). The rectangular niche still bears traces of mortar that held the marble or metal tablet in place.
